A basement is a part of a building partially or fully below the ground. Most homeowners use it as a utility space for the breaker panel, fuse box, boiler, and air conditioning.
The below-ground nature of basements makes them prone to dampness and musty air, which creates the perfect breeding ground for pests and allergens. Thanks to advancements in waterproofing, homeowners can now use basements for more than just storage.
Basements allow homeowners to maximize the square footage of the main living area, which is particularly helpful for large families. It also makes a home that much more attractive to potential buyers when listed on the market. Other advantages of basements include cooler rooms during the summer and safe space during extreme weather.
Types of Basement Construction
There are several types of basement construction, each with unique characteristics, benefits, and potential drawbacks. Understanding these different types can help homeowners make informed decisions about the construction and maintenance of their basements.
Poured Concrete
Poured concrete is a very common type of basement construction, preferred for its simplicity and sturdiness. It begins with pouring footings for the foundation, and then forms are used to hold the walls in place as they dry, resulting in a solid structure.
Precast Panels
Some builders choose precast panels to save time and money. These panels are foundation walls that are cast off-site and shipped to the building location for installation. They are made from high-strength concrete, which offers durability and strength.
Concrete Block
Concrete block construction is another popular and cost-effective option for building basements. These blocks are quicker to assemble than poured concrete and are reinforced with steel rebar for added stability.
Stone or Clay Tile Walls
In some older homes, the foundation walls are stone or clay tiles. These materials are often found in historic properties and offer a unique aesthetic. While generally strong, these materials can show signs of wear over time, especially in older constructions.

The work of Brandon C, Dylan E, Darrion R, Blake B and Cris B was all incredibly professional and well done. They were respectful of how their heavy machinery needed for the job moved around the yard, put extra care in not damaging things that were in the way of their work and even moved rocks my kids had decorated to a different spot so they wouldn’t get damaged which I felt was above and beyond. They really cared about doing what could be done for our specific porch/foundation fix rather than just doing a generic job.

We hired FRS to correct water seepage issues in our storm room and to add piers under one side of our house. Shawn explained the problems and solutions very well. Our crew came from Springfield MO, so had a 6 hour commute each day. They completed our project in 3-4 days. The team was led by James and Joseph. All work was excellent right thru cleanup. Excellent job guys!

We can’t say enough good things about this company. First, I’d like to start off with how Ed Macdonald (salesman) handled selling to us their product and plan. He took the time to answer all questions and concerns. He was professional but still personable. He gave us a timeline of what to expect and all came out as planned. Second, I’d like to thank Daryn Holder (foreman) for a job well done. He was able to lift our patios (front and back) though we had our doubts. He was thorough in explaining what he would be doing and gave periodic updates as he continued to work. He even asked if we were satisfied, which most companies do not bother to take the time to ask, they just take their payment and move on. Although our job took longer than planned or scheduled for, Daryn did not show he was frustrated, he was determined to ensure the job was completed to the best of his abilities. So thankful we found this company and had the opportunity to work with these two outstanding gentlemen.

John Hernandez did a full inspection of our foundation issues and was very thorough and showed me pictures of all our problems. He was very ethical and suggested a deck builder would better be able to fix our sagging rock piers than his company as the supports we’re not constructed correctly in the first place. We appreciate the honesty.
