How Does a Faulty Foundation Cause Sticking Windows and Doors?

Your foundation stabilizes your home and keeps all of the structural supports therein where they should be. If, however, your foundation begins to show signs of damage, then those same supports can begin to falter, either due to overall destabilization or to concentrated rot. Your door and window frames, for example, can begin to fall out of alignment as your foundation settles unevenly.

In that same vein, a destabilized foundation tends to increase the amount of hydrostatic pressure other supports throughout your home have to endure. While a faulty foundation isn’t always a cracked foundation, it can allow both standing water and humidity into the rest of your home. In turn, the materials making up your door and window frames can begin to develop stress cracks or other conditions that may make them harder to open or shut. Note that in either case, you’ll want to make sure that you invest in foundation repairs before you go about repairing any frames that have suffered damage. If you try to replace your door and window frames without addressing the core problem in your home, then you risk seeing worsening damage within your space over the next few weeks and months. Alternatively, if you invest in foundation repairs and then go about replacing your door and window frames, you’ll have a better chance of preserving those new supports in the years to come.
